Recently, I finished
reading the much anticipated Soldiers In
The Army of Freedom: The 1st Kansas Colored, The Civil War’s First
African American Combat Unit by Ian Michael Spurgeon. The 1st
Kansas Colored Infantry had a distinguished combat record and was the only
regiment that served solely in the trans-Mississippi to be selected as one of
Fox’s “300 Fighting Regiments.” The regiment has been long deserving of a
full-length book, and Ian Spurgeon did an outstanding job of telling its story.
He readily agreed to participate in a question and answer session for this
blog, and the interview will appear in two parts. The first part will be posted
tomorrow!
