Missouri established the Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site on October 28th. At this site, near Butler, a group of recruits from the 1st
Kansas Colored Infantry was attacked on October 28, 1862, with the 1st
Kansas suffering 10 killed; this skirmish is acknowledged to be the first time
that African-American troops experienced combat during the Civil War. Although open, the park is under development.
